The National Library of Australia’s historical newspaper database
TROVE Australian Newspapers is a magnificent online resource that allows access to historic Australian newspapers digitised as part of the Australian Newspapers Digitisation Program.
The free online service enables full-text searching of newspaper articles.
The service includes newspapers published in each state and territory from the 1800s to the mid-1950s, when copyright applies. Featured on the site is the first ever Australian newspaper, the Sydney Gazette, published in 1803.
The program to digitise out of copyright Australian Newspapers commenced in 2007, spearheaded by the National Library of Australia in collaboration with the Australian State and Territory libraries.
The service will soon comprise 40 million searchable articles.
The SEARCH project will be making extensive use of the Australian Newspapers resource. With the aid of library volunteers, our research team will be extracting and analysing important information on weather events and how early settlers responded to them.
